Lessons
in the Wilderness
by David Lazarus
Ex. 17:1-7
God’s Leading—Plan
Learning to be People of God
400 years slaves in Egypt
Pharoh, Bondage, Domination, Fear
God wants to teach them who he is
If Egypt is world, Red Sea Baptism, Desert is learning to walk in
New Life with Yeshua
Vs 2-3 God leads them to place with NO WATER
Don’t know what to do. Maybe better to go back to Egypt
Vs 4 Already Moses Loses patience
“These People”
Moses thinks they should already be able to trust God
But, Moses had himself spent 40 years in the Desert and had
learned that God would provide.
People are not ready. They are here to learn.
Moses is ready to say, “Fine. You don’t like it. Go find your own
water. Or, Go back to Egypt if you want.”
God had prepared Moses in the Desert because he wanted him to
demonstrate to the people who He is.
He wanted Moses to be a Shepard to the people, Lead them, teach
them.
Vs 5 “Go before my people”
Lead them to water. I will give to them even water.
Number 20:8-13
Moses is angry. God told home to speak to the Rock, but he is
shouting at the people “You rebellious people” God didn’t tell him
to say that, even though it is true. God wants him to demonstrate
his character to the people.
Speak to the Rock before we speak to the people.
“let us not be weary in well doing”
People needed to learn to trust God.
Learn that God loves them.
400 years slavery.
Slave obeys because of fear.
A slave is worth something only if he can work.
Slave cannot produce is worthless.
Lame, sick, elderly
Hos. 11:1-4
Son—Yeshua is perfect Shepard who teaches us the Father.
Teach to walk—in freedom of sonship
with the love that understands the pains and fears and needs of
man
Remove the yoke
2 things happen when don’t trust God.
Heb. 3:7-15 (quoting Ps. 95)
1. Hard Heart vs 8, 12
God wants us to have a heart of flesh that feels and responds.
2. Heart that goes astray. Vs10
